How to Use Colour Blocking

For most people, just thinking of what colour to use in a room beyond a safe neutral can be daunting. But once you get over that hurdle, it’s like opening a whole world of options with colour! There have been some fantastic examples showing up on Instagram and beyond, with creative uses of geometric patterns to add interest and often serve a clever purpose as well.

In my own home, I used colour blocking to solve a problem – I needed a white wall for our projector (we have that instead of a TV) but wanted the rest of the room to be a deep purple. I took inspiration from the two wall lights, and the diagonal patterns of the light they cast up and down, to create the angles on the wall, which then extended up on to the ceiling. I added in a gold strip as well to help reflect light since the purple is quite dark.

If you’re not ready to commit to a whole wall, you can also create a work of art out of a normally overlooked feature like your stairs.

If you want to keep the walls neutral or white, often gold and metallics look best on darker, jewel tone colours, so you can paint a border around them to produce the same effect while maintaining the overall look you want from the walls.

Another way to use colour blocking is to add interest and focus the eye on a particular area or artwork. It can help create a zone, and really change the mood of a space.

But if you’re ready to go all in – this breathtaking image from Brooklyn Homestyling will turn your whole room into a work of art! The above examples can all be achieved with some frog tape and some careful painting – but to achieve something the scale of the photo below, you probably need a professional. So what do you think, are you ready to try adding shapes and lines and colour to your home?
